Beck’s humorous video “Things I have to Do Today” was inspired by Bruce Nauman, for his interest in utilizing everyday occurrences in his art making. Utilizing photographs of his hand over the course of two-months, Beck documented the constantly changing to-do list on his
hand. Important events, peoples names, and inconsequential reminders all share both the same organic space and the short lifespan, only to make room for new additions and necessities that replace and mark over the older and forgotten issues. While this act of marking on ones body
is juvenile, it creates a sense of urgency, accomplishment, and history that could not exist in any other form. Dave Beck is a practicing 3D digital artist and sculptor, living in Wisconsin. He is the recipient of the 2010 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge Award, given by the National ScienceFoundation. Beck’s artwork has been featured in publications such as the New York Times, Sculpture Magazine, National Geographic, the journal Science, and the book GameScenes: Art in the Age of
Videogames. Beck has shown his work in exhibitions across the country, including Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, LA, Minneapolis, Boston, Milwaukee, and San Diego. In 2009, Beck was a distinguished fellow at Nebraska’s Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. The Science Museum of Minnesota chose him as a distinguished fellow and
visiting artist for the summer of 2010. In the past two years he had solo exhibitions at Wisconsin’s Overture Center for the Performing Arts, the State University of New York’s Gibson Gallery, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s SARUP Gallery.
